Inspiring Hope through Life Changing Adventures

We set out on a journey in the Fall of 2020 to build High Point Youth Ranch. We knew the journey would be long, but we had no clue what all it would entail. In April of 2022, we felt the need to begin offering programs to young people now - we couldn’t wait until the Ranch was built!

I heard the owner of Oasis Market speak at a Tulsa Rotary Club meeting, and I was moved by his story. I told my wife I wanted to go see the grocery store, so one Saturday afternoon, we made our way north on Peoria Avenue. As we passed the HelmZar Challenge Course, I said, “I wonder what’s going on with HelmZar. It looks like it is empty.”

Our Story

After a lot of research and a few months had passed, I met with a representative from Tulsa Public Schools to discuss the property. The Lord opened the door wide for us! We moved into the facility on October 7, 2022. I knew we wanted to have a challenge course on the property at High Point Youth Ranch, and this has given us the opportunity to learn so much about how to operate a course like this.

But more than that, we have met so many wonderful people - from past employees and board members to the new staff and people of the neighborhood! We are so excited to bring hope to many lives in the greater Tulsa area through this amazing facility and the gift of experiential education!

The amazing facility that High Point Urban Adventures calls home was built in 2007 as the HelmZar Challenge Course. It was constructed and operated by Tulsa Public Schools through the generous contributions of Mr. Henry Zarrow and the Helmerich Foundation. Over the past fifteen years, the thousands of program participants that have attended HelmZar all testify to the same impactful experience.

High Point Urban Adventures intends to carry forward that legacy of experiential education and instill hope in the life of each future participant.

The High Point team is excited to build on the legacy of those that have served at HelmZar in the past. We are grateful for the opportunity to see it fulfill the vision and beyond of those that helped lay the foundation.

“Our time at the course helped our students begin to understand how to work together to solve problems and how if we don’t work together, then we can’t accomplish our mission.”

— Youth Pastor, Evergreen Baptist Church

“Going to the Ropes Course was really cool. A lot of people conquered their fears.”

— Middle School Student

“My goal was to solidify our team and instill trust in each other. The Challenge Course was a perfect venue for this and fully lived up to the challenge.”

— Senior Recruiting Coordinator, BOK

“We took a reluctant group and started the day with games to get to know each other better. During the day, it was evident the dynamics of the group changed. They developed a great working relationship and now we see an environment where each individual is enforcing concepts learned at the challenge course.”

— Director of Safety and Health, John Deere Coffeeville Works

According to over 2,000 studies, hope is the single greatest predictor of success in education, work, health, mental health, social relationships, family, and trauma recovery. The Science of Hope gives us a research-backed approach to measuring our success at inspiring hope in our participants’ lives. We are partnered with Dr. Chan Hellman and the University of Oklahoma Hope Research Center for measuring the Hope Score of our program participants before and after their experience at High Point Urban Adventures.

Past results of program participants at the HelmZar Challenge Course showed statistically significant increases in hope, self-efficacy, group cohesion, leadership, trust, and goal orientation. The Hope Score will be a key measurement of the effectiveness of our program. We want our to leave knowing that tomorrow can be better than today and they have the ability to make it so!
